The sunflower by nature is grown and most suited with Somaliland all year-round weather hence it became inevitable to locate adequate and appropriate land to grow sunflower and impower the local farmers.
We located a vast land in Somaliland owned by families and mostly equipped with either water wells or dams, the rest have seasonal rain farms. These farmers are ready and willing to grow sunflowers when needed.
The land size needed to cultivate sunflower is estimated to around 5400 hectors in order to cover the required quantity of seed per year to meet the capacity of the refinery.
Somaliland agricultural research center in Hargeisa will extend their assistance to educate the farmers on how sunflower is best grown and steps to be followed.
Farmers will also need minor portable equipment’s to help them seed and harvest.
We estimated around 1050 farms or families will engage in this project and will subsequently benefit it from including their livestock.
