Overview

Somaliland Vegetable Oil Company (SOVOLCO) was Incorporated in September 2012 at Hargeisa by investors of both genders from the Somaliland Diaspora, and local investors. SOVOLCO was established to be the first and the only manufacturer of high-quality sunflower oil in Somaliland.

Our manufacturing facility is in North of Hargeisa at Dara Salaam district Somaliland built according to international standards and composed of Refinery capacity of 15 tons per day, 9 storage tanks at capacity of 400 tons and borehole of 120 mega at depth for crude oil and refined oils, filling lines, pet bottles blowing machines, warehouse, water tanks, staff accommodation, etc.…

SOVOLCO aspire to provide high quality sunflower oil entirely harvested by Somaliland farmers, crushed and refined in SOVOLCO plant to deter imported crude oil.

The ethics and ethos of the company is to produce quality products marketed as home grown and processed, standing out from alternative of imported products.

The business currently produces up to 450,000 liters of Refined Sunflower Oil per month. The  unrefined Sunflower Oil is currently purchased from the Ukraine, although a local out growers’ program may be supplying sunflower seed of the first test starting from December 2022.

As per the memorandum of understanding between Sovolco and local out growers (farmers), the sunflower seed produced by the out growers (farmers) will be purchased by Sovolco, crush the seed in its own crusher and will supply the sunflower crude oil to Sovolco refinery plant.

SOVOLCO has seen a steady increase in the scale of its operations since it started production in 2018. All sunflower production is sold through its distribution channels, whilst our sole regional distributors distribute the Sunflower refined oil. However, growth has been constrained due to inefficient raw materials due to Covid 19 and the increase of cost of raw materials from international markets and in particular our sole suppliers in Ukraine due to the war in that region.

The business is seeking an investment package of $1,029,000.00 for the first phase sunflower seed for the first season of 2700 hectors which will be used to purchase sunflower seed crushing machine, sunflower raw materials (seed), and packaging of cartons, preforms, caps, handles and additives aimed at boosting the existing Sunflower production.

The production is currently restricted by slow supply of edible oil globally mainly due to Covid 19 and increased cost of raw materials required. The investment is likely to purchase sunflower seed crushing machine, 50 tons per day of sunflower seeds from local farmers, and packaging materials (preforms, and cartons) in second season of 2023.
